3D Race to the Masjid Game

3D Race to the Masjid Game

Ramadan is almost a month away and I'm excited!

I was honoured to participate in #craftyourramadan hosted by @nidatastic. My 2 sons have been enjoying board games lately so I decided to make our family time during Ramadan extra special!

This 3D Race to the Masjid Game not only encourages family time, but helps build their Islamic knowledge, numerical skills and thinking skills.

The aim of the game is to reach the Masjid first- and it all depends on your Islamic knowledge and good deeds! You move a step forward each time you answer the question correctly. When you land on a 'chance' flag you must flip the coloured coin. Whichever colour it lands on determines which card you'll need to pick up - in this case either the Uh oh! or Bonus card.

You move up a level if you reach a counter with climbers or the stairs.

The whole idea is to not only have fun, but to help them understand the 'why' of things when they answer incorrectly.  This way they do actions with love, to please Allah - not us.

I made mine large, however you can make it any reasonable size. Here's how I made it.

What you need:

  • Thick cardboard (I used boxes from the market)
  • Corrugated cardboard strips (mine came from Ikea pot packaging)
  • Box knife
  • Glue gun
  • Marker
  • Decorative craft supplies and other recyclable bits and bobs: I used dried leaves, paint, wooden pieces and a cardboard lid.
  • Peg dolls

How to make:

1. Draw 3 shapes on cardboard, each measuring 5-10cm smaller than
the previous.

2. Carefully glue around the edges and attach the corrugated strips.

3. Optional - Glue in between each layer to have them in a stacking position. I chose not to as it'll be too difficult to store. As long as it's steady it should be fine.

4. Decorate the Masjid. I used a large lid, leaves and a wooden moon.

5. Make number counters. I cut cardboard circles, painted them and then added numbers. You can make these from paper, stickers or write directly on each level.

6. Plan where the counters, climbing rocks and stairs will be positioned and then glue them.  I used wooden pieces for climbing. You can also make popstick ladders.

I also made steps from egg cartons so players can go to the next level.

7. Make the 'chance' flags and decorate your peg dolls.

8. Make your own Question, Bonus and Uh oh! (bad deeds) cards.

Now that everything has been glued on, you are ready to play!

Bismillah!!
